Government highlights importance of biomass heat The Government has at last highlighted the importance of renewable heat to help meet the UK's renewable energy target of 15% of our total energy by 2020. Heat currently accounts for 47% of the UK's carbon emissions. The Government sponsored Renewable Energy Strategy Consultation was published at the end of June and suggested that biomass heat may be able to deliver the heat demand for around 3.2 million households in support of a total renewable heat target of 14% by 2020. The Government recognises that substantial policy changes will be required to meet this target, as renewable heat currently accounts for less that 0,6% of all heat. The introduction of a new heat incentive mechanism (similar to a feed tariff) is now being openly considered by the Government. | |
